Text Examples
Here are some examples of different types of fonts that have given me ideas and inspiration for my pop music magazine. I got them all from a website called dafont.com that contains hundreds of different types of fonts in various shapes and sizes. I have chosen the ones above because they caught my eye and stood out to me as i was looking for examples. I like all of the texts that i have chosen because they are unique and bold so that they are really noticeable to the audience and memorable.

Makeup Ideas
These images above are from various different websites that i chose from Google images. I researched makeup thoughts to inspire me and give me ideas for the models i will use throughout my music magazine. Smoky eyes or bright colored eye liners stand out and follow the codes and conventions of a pop music magazines because they are prominent to the audience and noticeable. Red lipstick has different ideologies behind it but i think for a pop music magazine it is appropriate and features in the majority of the existing magazines that i have studied for influence.
Costume Ideas
The pictures of the clothes that are featured above are all taken from the Topshop online website. They are clothes that appeal to me which is relevant because i fit the reader profile perfectly. The clothes i have chosen are not too inappropriate or revealing, which most of the clothes featured on artists in existing pop music magazines currently are. Clothes featured in pop music magazines aren't dull and boring because they need to stand out and be noticed. The clothes i have chosen above are all unique, different and mostly bright colored.

Liiar Analysis Double Page Spread Q Music Magazine
The main focus on this double page spread is to introduce
the main story about Noel Gallagher. You know that it’s him straight away as
you can relate the two images too each other before you read anything on the
page to confirm who the artist is. He’s positioned in a very similar way to the
image on the front cover. His name isn't actually stated in the title on the
page that relates to a quote from Noel Gallagher or a fragment of speech that
he would use. There isn't a lot of text on the double page spread it’s mainly
taken up by the image, background and title. It’s only an introduction into a large
text about Noel Gallagher following onto the next few pages in the magazine.
The text on the double page spread gives you an insight into the story that
it’s about to tell you about Noel Gallagher and his continuous fight with work
to be successful and his true love for music that he will never give up on it.
The title says ‘job’s a good un’ it’s spelt in slang like this reflecting Noel
Gallagher’s accent and the dialect he delivers. This is to show off his
personality through image and text rather than meeting him in person. The
writing is in big bold print relating to his personality being bold and him
standing out from the crowd.
Q magazine is published by Bauer media group. It is
originally from Germany but sells in 15 different countries worldwide including
the UK. The company was founded in 1875 and has been privately owned and run by
the Bauer family for generations. It is know that 38 million magazines are sold
per week of Q magazine’s weekly edition. From this information I can tell that
Q magazine is hugely liked by the public and is a favorite music magazine
worldwide.
The ideology of this double page spread is to entice the
reader to read more into the story about Noel Gallagher. This is brought to the
reader’s attention due to the iconic image of Noel Gallagher himself and the
catchy heading. The article will appeal to most Q magazine readers and
specifically people that are a big fan of Noel Gallagher himself or the band
Oasis he split from in 2009. The image has been taken of him from a straight
angle he’s looking right into the camera almost as if he’s looking at you as a
reader. There are no real implicit values all explicit directly telling us what
the article is all about and who it’s about because of the image of Noel
Gallagher. The small amount of writing gives a lot away about the article but
not too much it leaves you wanting to read on more into the article about his
life since 2009 when Oasis split up. Because Noel Gallagher has kept his career
quiet since Oasis I think this edition of Q magazine will be valuable to his
biggest fans as one of the biggest things he’s done for a long time relating to
the public and being in the public eye. He talks about his fans on this page
saying ‘Nobody’s got the formula, it’s the
people who decide’ this relates hugely to his fans and sort of praising them in
a way saying thank you for getting him where he is today because it’s certainly
not easy.
Q magazine is known to be suitable for an older audience and
mainly bought by older generations I think that younger people more recently
will have started to buy Q magazine more. This is partly because I know people
that read Q magazine that are my age and I have bought the magazine myself in
the past. The magazine is becoming more suited to the younger generation as
well as the old. Because the magazine is expensive social class is important
when buying Q magazine people with little money are not going to buy the
magazine as it is not a necessity. People in a higher social class will be more
likely to buy the magazine as a luxury as they will be able to afford it much
more generously. This also stops the magazine been main stream and separates it
from the average music magazine out there on the market.
The image of Noel Gallagher on the double page spread brings
so much emotion to the article before you even begin to read it. The way he is
stood and the position he is stood in insinuates a lot of attitude. He is
wearing the same clothes as on the contents page image and on the front cover
image. This is so that readers recognize him without reading the article
encouraging them to stop and read about him more. The colors he is wearing are
browns, blacks and blues. Theses dark colors link in with the deep emotion he
shows. You can see his wedding ring clearly on this image this could be to
introduce the readers to his life just by looking at the imagine and to tell us
that he is married before you read on more into the story and discover this for
yourself. The fact that there is a huge article on him in Q magazine in the
first place shows that he is a well-loved iconic music artist that people do
look up to and want to know more about his life. If this wasn't the case he
wouldn't be on the main pages of this music magazine like the front cover, the
contents page and a whole other 9 pages about him including more writing and
images. In all of these images he is
featured on his own and not with anybody else this relates to the story inside
the magazine about him splitting from the rest of the band Oasis and carrying
on as a solo artist and not giving up on the dream he lived and loved for so
many years previously.
LIIAR Analysis Contents Page Q Music Magazine
There isn't a main image used in the contents page of this magazine there are several images relating to the stories throughout the rest of the magazine. The entire images used show connotations of different emotions. Most of the emotions shown are relating to the story behind the image and the genre of the music artist. For example Ellie Goulding is shown to be innocent and pure using light colors in the background of her picture and emphasizing her bright blonde hair. But Adam Ant is shown with an ugly looking bull dog showing his tattoos and wearing all black. There is also a picture of the Q magazine edition itself advertising subscription to the magazine weekly working out cheaper than purchasing the magazine every week. The design of the contents page is simple and easy to understand with images and insights into stories at the top of the double page contents page and the cover story and regulars at the bottom with the Q review which is shown every week running down the right hand side. The ratio of text and image I think is perfect with not too many images making the page look too busy and complicated and not too much text making it boring to read. All of the text is made view-able and it is clear that it is a contents page as it has ‘ Contents’ written at the top with the monthly edition underneath it and the name of the magazine. It also has clear page numbers after each story clearly directed you to the pages you need to be on to read more. The color scheme on the page is the same as the front cover. Black’s whites and reds are mainly used for the page to be recognizable and related to Q magazine. The fonts used are different for each section so the cover story is in a different font to the regulars or the Q review section. This makes the pages less boring and different but effective. The most important information is in the brightest colors to catch the reader’s attention straight away.
From this information I can tell that
Q magazine is hugely liked by the public and is a favorite music magazine
worldwide.
The cover story is clearly stated on the contents page so I
think the main focus of the magazine relating to the main image on the front of
the magazine is noticeable straight away and stands out. The image used on the
front cover is a similar image to that used on the contents page of Noel
Gallagher next to the cover story review. I think the contents page is just as
expressive and exaggerated as the front cover because of the set out and the
stories included. . The magazine would not appeal to everybody though as some
people may not like music magazines at all and not read them or may be
interested in a different music genre. The magazine is £3.99 which is expensive
for a music magazine this also makes it less mainstream. Lots of different
artists are included in the contents pages on pictures including the main story
line with Noel Gallagher. This makes the rest of the magazine seem even more
exciting and encourages you to read more. I think the fact that more than one
image has been used on the contents page makes it interesting than just one
picture of one artist. The contents page also sets trends for the rest of the
magazine surrounding music artists and stories. The pictures and stories are
all really different therefore there is no repetition in the music magazine
with each story been unique and recent to the music industry. All of the
conventions that define social norms are stated on the contents page much more
than on the front cover with that little bit more of information.
People in a higher social; class will be more
likely to buy the magazine as a luxury as they will be able to afford it much
more generously. This also stops the magazine been mainstream and separates it
from the average music magazine out there on the market.
The double page contents page of this magazine has lots of
representations including persuasive attitudes to promote the magazine and
celebrities. The story lines contain a range of different representations
including different music genres not just the usual indie/rock. All of the images
are bold and eye catching drawing you in to the story. All of the images also
show expression and in some cases vulnerability. Most of the images are wide
shots showing full body images of an individual or group of people. Others are
close ups and extreme close ups showing more of the emotion rather than the
scenery and background of the other shots. Unlike the image on the front cover
of Noel Gallagher the images on the contents page don’t give us as much insight
into the artist and the story behind the pictures which is what the contents
page is there for to encourage you to read on. The images all do the artists
justice there are not bad images or shots that have been taken and are all
understandable relating to the story beside them. The artists are all posing
and seen to be related to the genre of music they specify in.
LIIAR Analysis Front Cover Q Music Magazine
The main image used in this front cover is a wide shot and
has many connotations behind it. The image of Noel Gallagher could be seen as
seductive to women encouraging them to buy it. The design on the magazine
masthead is very signature because it’s the same on every Q magazine in red and
black, in the same font, the same font size and in the same position on the
page. This means people can recognize the magazine straight away wherever it
is. The design and color scheme has also been based around the main image. The
text colors used are red, black and white with a little bit of gold. The red and
white have been used to compliment the masthead and the black has been used to
compliment the picture of Noel wearing all black. The gold has been used for a
change to draw your attention to the bubble. It says ‘album goldmine’ which is
another reason why the color gold has been used relating to the title. The
headline of the magazine is the largest text compared to the other headlines
suggesting it is the most important and always relating to the main image used
on the front cover. The main image has to be attractive to make people want to
buy the magazine and to interest them usually the celebrity used is well known
and popular. Other conventional elements used in the magazine are: plugs, a
sell line, cover lines and a tag line. The main story line ‘Mission accomplished
Noel how he did it his way’ is very powerful and draws your attention straight
away to it. The sell line ‘The world’s greatest music magazine’ persuades the
buyer to purchase the magazine and has a lot of influence on their decision. The
cover lines are placed in areas on the front cover of the magazine that are
noticeable and spacious in alignment with each other.
From this information I can tell that
Q magazine is hugely liked by the public and is a favorite music magazine
worldwide.
There are many values and beliefs shown through the front
cover of this magazine the main one relating to the image. It tells the reader
that the magazine is big and important. As the picture has been taken on a tilt
looking up at Noel Gallagher this could represent power. The image of a male
could possible attract more females to buy the music magazine as it is widely
known for been more of a male music magazine than female. This image could
change the readers view on this matter. The image could inspire the idea of how
they want the magazine to appear. Noel Gallagher could be a sex symbol to
females this is a huge attraction to music magazines. The image on the front
always determines whether the reader will buy it or not so it has to be
interesting. The music magazine could be seen as just a mainstream magazine for
the simple reason that it is the world’s most popular music magazine and
because of its audience of both sexes and different age groups. The magazine
would not appeal to everybody though as some people may not like music
magazines at all and not read them or may be interested in a different music
genre. The magazine is £3.99 which is expensive for a music magazine this also
makes it less mainstream. The main image sets a trend for the rest of the music
magazine and the main story line gives an insight into the content of the
magazine. All of the stories are largely music related and always recent to the
month the magazine is published. Noel Gallagher is a confident character trying
to win over the buyers of this magazine with his charm shown in the image on
the front cover. The terminology and language used also has a big impact on the
audience that the magazine caters for.
People in a higher social; class will be
more likely to buy the magazine as a luxury as they will be able to afford it
much more generously. This also stops the magazine been mainstream and
separates it from the average music magazine out there on the market.
On the front cover of the magazine the main image of Noel
Gallagher has a huge representation towards the music magazine as it
contributes to the idea of the target audience and who would recognize the
artist. This would be older people rather than young. The main image is
represented by a male to draw female attention to the magazine. He is a big
figure in the music industry and is expected to be recognized by most people.
The way he is stood against the amp tells us a lot about his personality and
the story we could be reading about without even opening the magazine. The
colors that represent the magazine front cover are simple but effective
sticking to one color scheme not making it too busy and keeping the main focus
on the image. The cover lines include a lot of gossip about people in the music
industry and interesting stories that would make you want to buy the magazine
and read more. The music genre in Q magazine is indie/rock which is also
represented by Noel Gallagher on the front cover as he is well known for been
in Oasis which is mainly Indie music. A lot of the songs he originally sang
were deep and emotional but this is not shown on the front cover the feeling we
get from him is blank especially due to the color of clothing he is wearing
which is all black.

Music Magazine Influences
Vibe is a music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones launched in 1993. The publication features R&B and Hip-Hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. It is published monthly and the magazines target audience is young urban followers between the ages of 18-34. The magazine costs £4.45 in the UK. This is a really affordable price for a monthly magazine and i personally would definitely buy this magazine monthly at this price
Billboard is an international magazine devoted to music and the music industry and is one of the oldest trade magazines in the world. It maintains several internationally recognized music charts that track the most popular songs and albums in various categories on a weekly basis It is an American music magazine and is published weekly. The magazine costs £4.49 each week to buy in the UK. In my opinion for a weekly magazine this price is expensive and would put me off buying the magazine every week because of the cost.

LIIAR Analysis College Magazine Front Cover
LIIAR Analysis College Magazine Front Cover
I have used a medium close up image of my
friend Leah Haywood for my main image on my front cover of my college magazine.
I took the photographs of her in the art department at college as my theme for
my college magazine is an art issue. I used a simple angle of her
looking straight into the camera and at the audience. The lighting in the art department is bright because it is all open plan containing many windows and lights. In the background of the picture you can see various items which are in the art department to add to the theme and setting of art which i chose for my magazine I used a three part color scheme of black, purple and green which are the original Wyke colors that are used now in college and on advertising products for the college such as it's prospectus. This makes the magazine recognizable to people because when they see the colors before they even read the magazine they know that it is associated with Wyke College. The medium close up shot shows the art student as been happy and cheerful because of the clear facial expressions that can be seen. I included all of the conventions of a college magazine that i have already looked at previously. This includes: a masthead, a main image, a main cover line, other cover lines, an issue number, a bar code and a price. These things are what makes the college magazine recognizable and suitable for the audience it is aimed at. For the mast head i chose to call my magazine 'Lifestyle' as it's main heading with 'Wyke' written down the side of it so that it can be related back to Wyke College without it's main heading been 'Wyke' which wouldn't be as original or catchy. I used various cover lines as well as a main cover line relating to the image i used of my friend Leah. I made up the cover lines based on true stories about Wyke as well as thinking of some extra ones. The college magazine i have made is a Wyke magazine and would therefore be sold by Wyke for its students. It may also be put onto the market in shops through other agencies to help sell the magazine. The reason i have created this product is to inform the students that study at Wyke college specifically for this issue that take art as a subject what the art department have got to offer. Other issues of the magazine could interest other students in the college that specifically study other subjects such as sport or science and an issue based on that subject could be made. The magazine is informative including facts and figures as well as been attractive and fun at the same time. The values behind the media product are entirely educational and are all about the college itself and student life. The magazine as a whole isn't controversial in any way because it is aimed at college students as a whole. The need for the product is a way to keep students up to date with whats going on in there college in a way they can find out for themselves and how they can get involved and join in and make the best of college life. The magazine is aimed at college students especially ones that are studying at Wyke. It could also be aimed at the parents or relatives of those students that are studying at the college and are also interested in whats taking place and when its taking place. The magazine is only priced at one pound which makes it affordable for everybody that wants it including working class, middle class and upper class students. If the product was expensive it wouldn't be successful as students are known to have little money due to the fact that they are in full time education and don't have a full time job to be able to afford extras such as magazines. They are classed as a luxury and not a necessity as not purchasing the magazine wouldn't affect the education on the students therefore the product has to be affordable and attractive to make the students want to spend money on it. The media product represents success at the college and capability of its students. It shows people what the students at Wyke get involved with at the same time as allowing people to see how individuals have grown from strength to strength and achieved their potential at college. The brand that is represented is Wyke as a college and the name Wyke to the audience and the individual that is represented in this particular issue is Leah Haywood who is a current student at the college now.

College Magazine Analysis Three
Only one main image is used on the
front cover of this teen magazine covering the full page. The magazine has a
three part text color scheme using the colors: black, pink and red. The
background main image is a mixture of colors including: white, blue and black
relating to the text colors. The text stands out because of the definite colors
used to emphasize the text especially the masthead. The colors used blend
really well together making the magazine attractive and recognizable at the
same time. The front cover of this magazine contains conventional features to a
teen magazine such as: a masthead, a main image, cover lines, a main cover
line, a bar code a price and a date that
the magazine was published. The main image used is of a female celebrity
attracting people to the magazine because of this celebrity feature. It also
includes typical teenage cover lines including fashion and fitness. On this
front cover of the magazine conventions have been broken as the main cover line
usually the boldest and stands out the most of all the cover lines because it
relates to the main image used but in this case the main cover line doesn't stand out as well as other cover lines about the latest teenage fashion tips.
Teen vogue magazine began as a magazine for teenage girls produced in the USA.
The magazine focuses on fashion and celebrities and includes information about
entertainment and the latest feature stories on current issues and events. It’s
first issue was February to March 2006 and the chief editor is Amy Astley. The
magazine follows basic conventions of a teen magazine focusing mainly on
teenage girls. As well as informal stories the magazine also covers teenage
issues such as sexual health and pregnancy. The audience for this magazine is teenage girls 16 to 19. The social class
status of this magazine would be middle and upper class as the magazine is more expensive than most teenage magazines
and is more luxury such as it has a glossy cover rather than a plain one. I
think the minimum age for this magazine is 16 because of the controversial
topics covered which may not be suitable for teenage girls as young as 13. The
magazine may not appeal to all teenagers for example males or girls that simply
aren't interested in celebrities or fashion. The magazine is stereotypical of
teenage girls as not all of them are as teen vogue would represent them.
College Magazine Analysis Two
Only one main image is used for the
front cover of this teen magazine taking up the full page. The magazine
has a text color scheme which is using
the colors red, white and yellow. The background image color used is blue.
The colors are conventional of a teenage magazine as they are bright and stand
out to young adults and teenagers to attract them to the magazine. The only
dark colors used are within the main background image of the girl. The red,
yellow and white work really well together making the text extremely visible
and clear to read. The text shown is to encourage teens and college students to
be attracted to the magazine because of the simple layout of the magazine front
cover and the bold color scheme used. The cover lines give a snippet of each
story that is featured inside of the magazine persuading teenagers to want to
read more. The magazine includes main features such as: the masthead, main
cover line, cover lines, a bar code, the date, the price, the issue,
advertising and pull quotes. All of these features work together to make the
magazine attract the right audience and be successful. The masthead is the name
of the magazine and this is the boldest piece of text on the magazine front
cover to make it recognizable. The main cover line and main image usually
relate to each other and the cover line tells the story of the image. All of
the elements included are conventional of a magazine front cover and therefore
help to sell the magazine and make it appealing to audiences. Teen People was a
magazine that was introduced in 1998 as part of People magazine. In 2006 the
company announced that it was going to shut down the production of Teen People
and the last issue was released in September 2006. The magazine the company belonged to was Time Warner and
was published in the USA. The magazine mainly featured teen celebrity idols as
well a t he latest gossip. It also included competitions and prizes to be won
as well as fashion and beauty advice for both male and female teens. The
magazine was portrayed in a mainly celebrity limelight which could be seen as
negative having a bad example of teenagers. This is because if girl and boys
see a celebrity in a magazine they idolize them and want to be like them and
look like them which is impossible and the celebrity influence on teenagers can
get out of hand. The audience that this magazine was aimed at is teenagers 13
to 19 both male and female but it could be argued mainly female. The magazine
attracts teenagers because the magazine includes everything a teenager could
possibly want to find out about not all having positive effects on the younger
generation of people at that time.
College Magazine Analysis One
Only one main image is used on the
front cover of this college magazine taking up the full page. The magazine has
a three part color scheme including the colors: black, white and yellow. The
color pink is also featured on the front cover of the college magazine only
once. The colors aren't necessarily conventional of a typical college magazine
front cover. The bright colors such as white, yellow and pink are but the color
black isn't as it is a dull color compared to the other bright ones which stand
out. The main image is very dark and the background is black making the white
and yellow text really noticeable when you look at the magazine. The text shown
on the front cover is based around been persuasive and advertising the magazine
at the same time. It only shows an insight into each story making you want to
read more into the magazine. The magazine includes main features such as the
masthead which is the name of the magazine and the main image which shows a
college student holding equipment ready to do some work. It also includes a
main cover line which relates to the main image of the boy. There are various
cover lines on the front cover of the college magazines to entice the audience
as well as informative features such as: the web site name, the price, the bar code, the date and the issue. All of these items are conventional of a college magazine and usually
feature on most of them. This makes the magazine noticeable and recognizable.
‘College’ magazine is a college guide and quarterly magazine written and edited
by college students and created in 2007 by publisher and founder Amanda
Nachman. She was a student herself in
her senior year of college when she launched the first issue of the magazine in
September 2007. The magazine features all social college issues including:
general advice, career tips, student success stories, sports features,
celebrity interviews, sex advice and health questions. The magazine front cover doesn't feature anything offensive or off putting it contains mutual cover
stories causing no controversy. The magazine is portrayed in a completely
positive way with helpful and informative effects. The magazine is aimed at an audience of
students 16 to 21 male and female at college that are studying and anybody
interested in any particular cover line that interests them in the magazine.
The way that the magazine comes across is stereotypical of students but neither
in a positive or negative way. Everything you would imagine to be included on
the front cover is included to attract the right people to the magazine.
Preliminary Exercise Brief
Using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school or college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.
