There isn't a main image used in the contents page of this magazine there are several images relating to the stories throughout the rest of the magazine. The entire images used show connotations of different emotions. Most of the emotions shown are relating to the story behind the image and the genre of the music artist. For example Ellie Goulding is shown to be innocent and pure using light colors in the background of her picture and emphasizing her bright blonde hair. But Adam Ant is shown with an ugly looking bull dog showing his tattoos and wearing all black. There is also a picture of the Q magazine edition itself advertising subscription to the magazine weekly working out cheaper than purchasing the magazine every week. The design of the contents page is simple and easy to understand with images and insights into stories at the top of the double page contents page and the cover story and regulars at the bottom with the Q review which is shown every week running down the right hand side. The ratio of text and image I think is perfect with not too many images making the page look too busy and complicated and not too much text making it boring to read. All of the text is made view-able and it is clear that it is a contents page as it has ‘ Contents’ written at the top with the monthly edition underneath it and the name of the magazine. It also has clear page numbers after each story clearly directed you to the pages you need to be on to read more. The color scheme on the page is the same as the front cover. Black’s whites and reds are mainly used for the page to be recognizable and related to Q magazine. The fonts used are different for each section so the cover story is in a different font to the regulars or the Q review section. This makes the pages less boring and different but effective. The most important information is in the brightest colors to catch the reader’s attention straight away.
Q magazine is published by Bauer media group. It is
originally from Germany but sells in 15 different countries worldwide including
the UK. The company was founded in 1875 and has been privately owned and run by
the Bauer family for generations. It is know that 38 million magazines are sold
per week of Q magazine’s weekly edition. From this information I can tell that
Q magazine is hugely liked by the public and is a favorite music magazine
worldwide.
The cover story is clearly stated on the contents page so I
think the main focus of the magazine relating to the main image on the front of
the magazine is noticeable straight away and stands out. The image used on the
front cover is a similar image to that used on the contents page of Noel
Gallagher next to the cover story review. I think the contents page is just as
expressive and exaggerated as the front cover because of the set out and the
stories included. . The magazine would not appeal to everybody though as some
people may not like music magazines at all and not read them or may be
interested in a different music genre. The magazine is £3.99 which is expensive
for a music magazine this also makes it less mainstream. Lots of different
artists are included in the contents pages on pictures including the main story
line with Noel Gallagher. This makes the rest of the magazine seem even more
exciting and encourages you to read more. I think the fact that more than one
image has been used on the contents page makes it interesting than just one
picture of one artist. The contents page also sets trends for the rest of the
magazine surrounding music artists and stories. The pictures and stories are
all really different therefore there is no repetition in the music magazine
with each story been unique and recent to the music industry. All of the
conventions that define social norms are stated on the contents page much more
than on the front cover with that little bit more of information.
Q magazine is known to be suitable for an older audience and
mainly bought by older generations I think that younger people more recently
will have started to buy Q magazine more. This is partly because I know people
that read Q magazine that are my age and I have bought the magazine myself in
the past. The magazine is becoming more suited to the younger generation as
well as the old. Because the magazine is expensive social class is important
when buying Q magazine people with little money are not going to buy the
magazine as it is not a necessity. People in a higher social; class will be more
likely to buy the magazine as a luxury as they will be able to afford it much
more generously. This also stops the magazine been mainstream and separates it
from the average music magazine out there on the market.
The double page contents page of this magazine has lots of
representations including persuasive attitudes to promote the magazine and
celebrities. The story lines contain a range of different representations
including different music genres not just the usual indie/rock. All of the images
are bold and eye catching drawing you in to the story. All of the images also
show expression and in some cases vulnerability. Most of the images are wide
shots showing full body images of an individual or group of people. Others are
close ups and extreme close ups showing more of the emotion rather than the
scenery and background of the other shots. Unlike the image on the front cover
of Noel Gallagher the images on the contents page don’t give us as much insight
into the artist and the story behind the pictures which is what the contents
page is there for to encourage you to read on. The images all do the artists
justice there are not bad images or shots that have been taken and are all
understandable relating to the story beside them. The artists are all posing
and seen to be related to the genre of music they specify in.
